Alexander von Humboldt Foundation

In recognition of his past achievements in research, the Foundation has elected chemist John Nixon , professor at the University of Sussex to receive a Research Award for the Scientific Cooperation between Great Britain and Germany, with the opportunity for an extended research stay in Germany.

American Carbon Society

Nicole Grobert
, a postdoctoral fellow working in the Fullerene Science Centre at the University of Sussex, has been awarded the 2001 Pergamon Carbon Prize by the Society. The award is made to a graduate student who has successfully defended a DPhil thesis during 1999-2000 and whose research is deemed to be particularly significant. It consists of a cash prize of 500 US dollars and 750 US dollars in expenses to attend the Carbon International Conference in Lexington, Kentucky later this year. Dr Grobert's thesis was entitled 'Novel carbon nanostructures'.
