Are the Major family's tastes more sophisticated than is usually admitted? As the prime minister was doing his best to play down the Scott report last week, his elder brother Terry Major-Ball was to be seen at an Australia House reading by Brian Matthews, director of the Robert Menzies Centre for Australian Studies at London University. Aside from a shared enthusiasm for cricket, Professor Matthews - a subtle, sophisticated and often extremely funny writer - is about as far from Jeffrey Archer as you can get.
