Group feasts on Clarke's praise

The 1994 Group of small research universities won the battle of the university pressure groups last week. Not only were they described by Charles Clarke as "the most progressive and exciting" of the three organisations, but while the Russell Group had to be content with an address from funding council chief executive Howard Newby and Campaigning for Mainstream Universities heard from senior civil servant Sir Alan Wilson, the 1994 had no fewer than two ministers for the launch of its Dangoor Scholarships. Of course, the presence of a Pounds 1 million donor and a consistently helpful stance on top-up fees probably helped. Flushed with their success, some members were thinking of changing the group's name to the W'Sens Group after the extremely glamorous new three Michelin-starred restaurant where they feted their donor.
