Young people from Drumchapel, one of Glasgow's most deprived areas, are optimistic about their futures, according to researchers at Glasgow Caledonian University. A survey, carried out for the Drumchapel Employability and Learning Partnership, found that far from being the non-participators they are often presumed to be, the local young people have a clear sense of purpose. John McKendrick of GCU's school of social sciences said the survey of more than 300 secondary pupils, backed by focus groups, showed that two-fifths wanted to go to college when they left school, and a quarter wanted to go to university. One-sixth wanted a job, one-tenth wanted an apprenticeship or training scheme place, and only one in 12 was unsure.
