Glasgow pursues economic and urban growth

十二月 3, 2004

Glasgow University is recruiting eight academic staff, including two professors, for its departments of economics and urban studies and will also make several senior appointments in psychology.

The jobs, which are advertised in this week's Times Higher , are part of Glasgow's plans to strengthen its research base in the faculty of social sciences.

Farhad Noorbakhsh, head of economics, said the move also reflected strong demand from undergraduate and postgraduate students. It is the second round of staff expansion in economics in the past 12 months, he said.

The university is looking for a professor/reader in economics, two lecturers from any area of economics and a research assistant.

The advertisement points out that the department recently helped establish the Research Centre for Public Policy for Regions in conjunction with Strathclyde University, using a £1 million grant from the Scottish Higher Education Funding Council.

The centre, under the direction of Glasgow's Richard Harris, will examine the role of public policy in promoting economic and social development in Scotland and beyond.

Four posts are also available in urban studies to boost the department's teaching and research strengths in housing, urban change and policy, and social justice and public policy.

A professor/reader in urban studies (public policy) is being recruited, along with two lecturers or senior lecturers and a research fellow.

Meanwhile, Glasgow will make a number of appointments in its 5*-rated psychology department, including at least two chairs, readerships and lectureships.

Some of the positions will be linked to a major university initiative in brain imaging. The psychology department also has a strong interdisciplinary slant, working with the departments of behavioural sciences, computing science, mechanical engineering and oncology among others.
