University reform was in the spotlight when the president of Universities UK took part in a debate with the French Prime Minister, Francois Fillon. Rick Trainor and other European university leaders took part in discussions in Paris, which follow recent controversial proposals for reforms to higher education in France. He said: "At a time when modernising our higher education systems and boosting the employability of our citizens is recognised as central to the competitiveness goals of the EU's Lisbon Strategy, I was pleased to be able to share UK universities' considerable achievements in this area and to learn from colleagues."
