Brussels, February 2002

A framework agreement on enhanced space cooperation has been signed in Paris by France's Centre national d'études spatiales (CNES) and German space centre the Deutsches zentrum fuer luft-und raumfahrt (DLR).

In addition to cementing existing cooperation on projects such as the Netlander automatic Martian station and the Cardiolab physiological space laboratory, the agreement will aid cooperation in the context of the GMES (Global monitoring for environment and security) and Galileo projects.

Cooperation will focus on the development of bilateral demonstration projects in the context of the GMES initiative for the management and distribution of environmental data, and the development of simulation tools for the Galileo satellite navigation programme.

The two agencies have also agreed to focus on activities undertaken in the framework of the European space agency (ESA) and to look into working together on new space activities.
