France sponsors scientific TV programmes

The French Ministry for Research has announced that it will sponsor, for the first time, scientific programmes on television.

Those one-minute programmes entitled 'La science avance' ('science is advancing') will be shown every weekend on the French private channel M6.

According to the ministry, the press is now reporting daily on scientific advances and innovation, and the general public is increasingly attentive. Yet, French citizens still lack understanding of public research in France, the ministry believes.

'The objective of this programme is therefore to explain the challenges of French research and the implications for our future,' states the Research Ministry. 'It is a case of better explaining research, its mechanisms, its objectives and the applications that can come out of it in our daily lives by following research teams in their laboratories,' it adds.

Physics and chemistry, human and social sciences, Earth and life sciences, will all be covered. Each programme will present a scientific innovation with the potential to result in progress, whether in the short or medium term. Examples include: getting rid of windscreen wipers for cars; sport and science, creating the electricity of tomorrow, curing meopathies; saving species and repairing a heart.

This effort to promote research and innovation to the public comes as the French government is introducing budgetary methods in favour of research and preparing a new law on orientation and programming.
