* Members of the Association of University Teachers Scotland are being asked whether the union should lobby all the main political party conferences north of the border, beef up its website and organise local seminars.

David Bleiman, AUT assistant general secretary, said: "The advent of the Scottish parliament means that AUT Scotland must have a much higher profile.

"We are already very effective on behalf of our 5,600 members in Scotland, but we want to enlist their views and participation so we can be even more effective in the future."
