* Jenny Shackleton has retired from her post as ministerial adviser on the New Deal in an escalating row over her pay-off as principal of Wirral Metropolitan College. Lecturers' union Natfhe wrote to education secretary David Blunkett complaining that her Pounds 169,000 pay-off as principal of the failing college represented "Pounds 1,000 for each person facing redundancy".
