Britain's top universities should be set a five-year target to recruit 70 per cent of their undergraduates from state schools, a report says. The report, A Level Playing Field: The Reform of Private Schools , published by the Fabian Society, also calls for greater equivalence between private and state schools. It argues that private schools that select pupils on ability skew state school intakes and hence exam performance. This affects the proportion of state and independent school pupils applying to leading research universities. Oxford and Cambridge universities recruit roughly half of their students from independent schools.
