The proportion of students undertaking paid employment during term time has fallen for the first time in four years, according to the Royal Bank of Scotland Student Living Index, 2007.
It found that some 41 per cent of all students will work part-time during term, down from 45 per cent last year, despite the introduction of top-up tuition fees in 2006.
The survey also found that the most popular part-time jobs are in bars, clothes shops and restaurants. It named Leeds University as the most cost effective place to study, as the city combines relatively low living costs with the third highest weekly earnings from part-time work.
