FE to be responsible for making good citizens

All further education students should be trained to develop citizenship skills to equip them better for life and work, an advisory group to education secretary David Blunkett has said.

A report from the group, published by the Further Education Funding Council, recommends that in addition to being part of the school curriculum, citizenship should be acknowledged as a "key life skill" and assessed in colleges.

Students should take part in activities such as community work, the government should provide cash for citizenship learning materials, and lecturers should be trained, the report says.
