Exeter cuts given nod

Exeter University's controversial plans to axe its chemistry and music departments were this week sanctioned by its governing council.

Members of the council voted in favour of the cuts on Monday, agreeing that they were necessary to redress the university's £4.5 million a year budget deficit. Exeter anticipates making 130 academic and support staff redundant. A campaign group of parents, teachers and students is planning to take Exeter to court for alleged breach of contract.
