Brussels, 05 Dec 2003

EurOCEAN 2004, the European Conference on Marine Science and Ocean Technology, will take place in Galway, Ireland on 10-13 May 2004. The successor to MAST-DAYS and EurOCEAN Conferences held in Brussels (1994), Sorento (1996), Lisbon (1998) and Hamburg (2000), EurOCEAN 2004 will focus on marine R&D and sustainable marine resource management. Opportunities under the EU's Sixth Framework Programme will also be explored, including details on significant funding for marine transport research

Over 50% of the European research Area is underwater. This territory extends from the Arctic Ocean through the Baltic Sea and the Atlantic Ocean, to the Mediterranean and Black Seas. European waters are of major strategic importance to the future economic and social development of the continent and the rest of the world.

EurOCEAN 2004 guest speakers will address how to best communicate the importance, excitement and value of marine science. Scientific sessions will focus on the range of marine issues, including ecosystems and biodiversity, forecasting and transport research, marine exploration and new horizons.

As a special feature of this edition of EurOCEAN, a session will look at young researchers' 'vision' of Marine Europe. Marie Curie Fellows from around Europe will be invited to share their experiences and predictions for the future.

A poster session and exhibiton will round out the event.
