Brussels, 20 May 2003

The Commission's Research DG, together with the University of Thessaloniki, are organising an EU-MEDIN forum on disaster research entitled 'The road to harmonisation' on 26 and May in Thessaloniki, Greece.

Around 150 participants from academia, public authorities and industry are expected to attend the event.

The forum's core objectives include:
- exploring the need for harmonisation in hazard assessment and mapping, vulnerability analysis, risk mapping, risk mitigation and restoration;
- encouraging ongoing and future projects to adopt the EU-MEDIN metadata protocols and to make their public deliverables accessible to the European scientific community;
- to have the EU-MEDIN initiative evolve into a 'European association of disaster science' according to the Madrid action plan.
