An 'International Treaty on Plant Genetic Resources for Food and Agriculture' was formally adopted by the UN Food and Agriculture Organisation Conference in Rome on 3 November 2001. The Community and the Member States signed the International Treaty on 6 June 2002. It covers 35 food crops and 29 forages and establishes a legally binding global framework for the sustainable conservation of plant genetic resources for food and agriculture.
In a report from Caroline JACKSON (EPP-ED, South West), the Environment, Public Health and Consumer Policy Committee is recommending that Parliament approve the ratification by the Community of this treaty. This would allow the Community to be represented when the bodies established by the treaty take their initial decisions.
