Eastern premise

I turned with interest to your analysis of higher education provision in the east of the United Kingdom (THES, June 13). Imagine my disappointment to discover the incomplete picture of what is available. It really is indicative of the way in which further education is perceived to include on your map only seven colleges delivering higher education programmes.

There are 28 general further education colleges in the Further Education Funding Council eastern region and extending that region to cover Lincolnshire means the tally rises by at least another three.

Certainly here at Norfolk College of Arts and Technology higher education represents an important part of our portfolio and a central part of our strategy to ensure learning at all levels is accessible to a population which as Mike Malone-Lee says "has no tradition of higher education and a real reluctance to travel!"
