The potential for a devastating Pacific Ocean tsunami striking the West Coast of America may be greater than was previously thought, according to researchers. Geological evidence gathered from the Gulf of Alaska coast by a team at Durham University suggests that future tsunamis in the region could be much bigger than the tidal wave caused by the 1964 Alaskan earthquake, which killed 35 people. "The evidence of widespread simultaneous plate rupturing within the Alaskan region has significant implications for the tsunami potential of the Pacific," Ian Shennan, professor of geography at Durham, said.
