A study of river boundaries by Durham University has found that up to 7 per cent - thousands of kilometres of river bed - are missing from official records used to resolve international land-boundary disputes. Durham researchers have set up a more comprehensive data service, the International River Boundaries Database, which collates data about the length and definition of river boundaries worldwide. "There are major issues in determining where a boundary runs in a river and what happens to it when the river moves or creates a new channel," said John Donaldson, research associate in the geography department.
