Strathclyde University has just held the grand final of its ferociously competitive University Challenge, whose first round saw the senior officers beaten so ignominiously that they claim their buzzer was not working properly. Vice principal Tom Devine announced the final round between "the elegantly dressed faculty of education and the dressed faculty of science''.

But sadly, the quality of the clothes proved no guide to the quality of the answers. As the winning science side snatched yet another starter for ten, quizmaster and honorary graduate Magnus Magnusson was moved to ask the educationists: "Are you just happy being well dressed?''
