Don's Diary

十月 20, 2000

Thursday
The site I founded in my gap year, InfoYouth, for 16 to 24-year-olds, is launching in just under a week. Under the auspices of Schoolsnet, it will provide information for students on hundreds of different career, gap year and summer job opportunities in addition to university and company profiles. It is going to be a frantic week getting everything finished on time, especially as I am starting my third year at the London School of Economics. Begin day with my first seminar on the origins of the world economy. Rush to our Westminster offices. Begin preparations for uploading more than 400 pages of career information. Back to LSE in the afternoon for more lectures.

Friday
Start at the office. We have had more editorial submitted overnight. Add these to the pile - am very relieved when all of our careers guide pages are uploaded with no problems. Have meeting to talk about our marketing mailshot to 4,000 careers advisers and then chase up our design agency for the artwork. Start a domain name transfer so that "www.info-youth.com" will point to our servers by Wednesday. Go to LSE's student union night and meet some old friends.

Saturday
Hangover.

Sunday
Visit library. I need to read up for next week's classes and start planning my economic history dissertation - thinking about something on the technology industry. Try to forget about InfoYouth.

Monday
Arrive at the office to find there was a problem putting 1,000 gap-year opportunities onto the site. Work with the developers and manage to get it working properly. Meet our design agency to look over their proposed letterhead designs. Rush back to LSE to talk to some lecturers and choose my fourth course for this year. I pick European economic policy.

Tuesday
Launch day tomorrow. We check the whole of InfoYouth and sort out any last-minute bugs. Things are running smoothly. The university section is finished: now we have in-depth profiles of every university in Britain.
Meet with the head of business development to discuss our strategy after launch. Pop back to LSE to meet my tutor and talk about dissertation. Very useful discussion - now I have a much better idea of what I could do. Drop off library books and jump on the Tube back to the office for a meeting with our head of sales. At the office till 8.30pm.
Grab something to eat and end up in LSE's Three Tuns pub.

Wednesday
Launch day. Start at LSE with a seminar on Japanese economic development. Get to the office at lunchtime and check InfoYouth once more. Run through site with chief executive. Get go-ahead to launch. Happy that all the work over the summer has been worth it. Press the button and the site goes live.

Tom Shepherd is InfoYouth's producer and founder. He is reading economic history at London School of Economics.
