Dolphins give a little local whistle

Welsh and Irish dolphins appear to be developing local "accents".

Ronan Hickey, a masters research student at the University of Wales, Bangor, found that dolphins off the coast of south Wales made different whistling, barking and groaning noises from their Irish counterparts in the Shannon estuary. He recorded 1,882 whistles and found 32 different sound categories, eight of which were only made by the Irish dolphins.
