Carl Togneri, director of semi-conductors at Scottish Enterprise, has won a two-year secondment to the post of director of the Scottish Institute for Enterprise.

The SIE, a consortium of Dundee, Edinburgh, Glasgow, Heriot-Watt and Strathclyde universities, is the second largest of 12 institutes in the United Kingdom and is backed by £4 million of government funding. It aims to foster an entrepreneurial culture among students and staff in the five institutions. Ms Togneri's role is to boost the universities' internal efforts and to link these to the wider entrepreneurial community.

She began her career in economic development at the Scottish Development Agency in 1989, after graduating from Glasgow University and Strathclyde University Business School.

Sir Graeme Davies, principal of Glasgow University, said: "We are all delighted to welcome Carl to the post and to have someone with her drive, energy and experience to move the institute forward from its early, encouraging start."

Irene Johnstone, director of the Scottish Enterprise staff exchange programme, said: "This is an excellent opportunity for Carl to share her knowledge with others in such an important new venture."
