DFG to establish six new research units

二月 8, 2005

Brussels, 07 Feb 2005 The German Research Foundation (DFG) is to establish a further six collaborative research units in order to promote cooperation between outstanding scientists.

The new units were selected on the basis of scientific cooperation on individual projects that demonstrate the highest degree of quality and originality at international level. Together the units will receive around 8.7 million euro over three years, after which there is the option of continued funding for a further three-year period.

Among the units being opened is one entitled 'Synaptic inhibition: molecular determinants on inhibitory neurons within defined networks' at the University of Heidelberg. Scientists will study inhibitory neurons, which are tasked with suppressing other nerve cells in the brain, in order to gain a better understanding of the functioning of the entire nervous system.

The other five units are: polyhedral surfaces - geometry and combinatorics; algebraic cycles and values of L-functions; dynamics of soil processes under extreme meteorological conditions; veterinary medicines in soils - basic research for risk analysis; and geobiology of organo- and biofilms - coupling the lithosphere and biosphere via microbial processes.
