Desperately seeking newly-weds

A Cardiff professor is urgently seeking 200 newly-married couples to assist his research into relationships.

Frank Fincham of the University of Wales Cardiff's school of psychology has received Pounds 144,000 from the Economic and Social Research Council to investigate the early years of marriage. But his research cannot begin until he has recruited sufficient couples.

Newly-weds willing to be studied will be interviewed for three hours. They will be asked about what makes them happy, how they stay happy and, crucially, what kind of problems creep into their relationship and why.

Assuming that the couple are still together one year after the wedding, they will have a follow-up interview. This will focus on how partners' expectations of each other and their relationship change.

"Inevitably, I will be asking couples a number of personal questions," said Professor Fincham. "All information given to me will be treated in strict confidence."

Couples willing to take part in the research can contact the School of Psychology's Newly Wed Couples Service Line on 01222 874932.
