About 30 researchers across the country have this week been road-testing the revolutionary European DataGrid (EDG). They hope to become missionaries for its use in their home institutions. The national e-science centre, run jointly by Edinburgh and Glasgow universities, hosted a two-day workshop on the EDG. The high-speed computing network will give academics access to a range of instruments and databases. It will unite systems that have different hardware and applications. The EDG testbed is being used principally for research in high-energy physics, earth observation and genetics.
