Original and unpublished essays should be written in Valencian, Spanish, English or French, to a length of 100 to 200 sheets of A4 paper, double-spacing typed and single-sided. ROYAL SOCIETY www.royalsoc.ac.uk/funding/index.html 2+2 Japan-UK fellowships The Royal Society invites applications for this programme consisting of two years' research in Japan followed by two years' research in the UK (2+2). The programme is open to UK researchers and is run in association with the Japan Society for the Promotion of Science (JSPS) and the Science and Technology Agency (STA). The fellowships are aimed at young postdoctoral scientists to enable them to spend a period of research in Japan, which may be viewed as critical to their career development, and offer funding for two years on their return. Applications will be considered for research in the natural and applied sciences. JSPS Fellowships are tenable in Japanese universities and research institutes of the Ministry of Education, Science, Sports and Culture (Monbusho) for periods of one to two years. BIOTECHNOLOGY AND BIOLOGICAL SCIENCES RESEARCH COUNCIL www.bbsrc.ac.uk Wain Fellowships: overseas travel for young researchers.
Wain fellowships provide travel and subsistence costs for up to three months for researchers who wish to visit an overseas institution in order to undertake a collaborative research project. Applications are invited in respect of visits proposed for 2001. Up to six awards. Applicants for a Wain fellowship must be UK-based and, at the time of application, be either approaching the end of their PhD studies, or at the start of an academic research career. Applications cannot be accepted from staff of government or government-financed laboratories. Finance for the Wain fellowships is provided by the Wain Fund, the primary aim of which is to support projects of benefit to agricultural research within the remit of BBSRC and Wain fellowship proposals must address this area of research. NATURAL ENVIRONMENT RESEARCH COUNCIL www.nerc.ac.uk Research Fellowships in the Environmental Sciences The NERC fellowship scheme aims to provide opportunities for outstanding environmental scientists to devote their time to research, to develop their research careers and to produce work of international importance. All awards may be full or part-time, subject to NERC's prior approval. Prospective applicants should first consult the NERC fellowship booklet, which is available with the relevant application forms at: www.nerc.ac.uk / awards/forms.htm. Applicants must not hold a tenured post in a UK university at the time of their application.
Postdoctoral Research Fellowships: Early career development awards of up to three years initially, to provide further postdoctoral experience and to support outstanding environmental scientists as they become independent investigators.
Advanced Research Fellowships: Awarded for up to five years initially, to enable outstanding early/mid career researchers to develop into team leaders of international standing. Senior Research Fellowships: Awarded for up to five years initially, to enable proven researchers of international standing at mid/peak career level to devote themselves to personal research.
NERC supports fellows undertaking research in areas of environmental sciences, including freshwater, earth, atmospheric, marine and terrestrial sciences, earth observation and polar science. NERC is particularly keen to attract scientists in areas of applied mathematics, physics or other strongly quantitative disciplines wishing to develop a career in environmental science. DIABETES UK www.diabetes.org.uk Project grants The grant is given for one, two or three years although the committee is prepared to consider longer term funding. Grants are given for a well-defined research proposal of timeliness and promise, which may reasonably be expected to lead to a significant advance. Grants may be awarded for research in universities, hospitals, medical schools or other research institutions or places of medical practice. Any graduate research worker may make applications for project grants on forms available from Diabetes UK. The present level of funding for project grants should not normally exceed Pounds 40,000 per year for up to three years. Next deadline: 5.30pm, September 1.
