Operating a powerful source of light in the X-ray range, the ESRF is a large experimental facility for basic and applied research in physics, chemistry, materials and life sciences. The next deadline for applications for beam time, for the period August 2000 to January 2001, is March 1. Applicants must use the latest proposal form and fill in all sections. Consult the website for up-to-date information on how to complete forms. From now on, the review committees will consider applications only for those beamline(s) which are requested on the proposal form. Applicants are therefore requested to contact the scientists in charge of beamlines on which projects may be feasible, prior to submitting applications. If requesting a beamline for the first time, consultations prior to submission are essential. Prix 2000 Technological Innovation and Food: Food Quality and Safety
The Altran Foundation rewards technological innovation in fields of application that vary each year. Individuals and teams from companies, research laboratories, universities and associations are eligible to apply. Projects submitted for the consideration of the foundation's jury must cover the following themes: food quality: contribution to health, the enjoyment of taste, service and the ease of use; food safety: traceability of products, inspection, measure, protection of the cold food chain, labelling, information, control over the processes.
The theme therefore covers the entire food chain: production, processing, distribution and consumption. Work on GMO (genetically modified organisms) and molecules is excluded, but work on methods for the detection and analysis of the presence of GMO are eligible for inclusion.

ASSOCIATION OF COMMONWEALTH UNIVERSITIES
Commonwealth Scholarship tenable at the University of the South Pacific 2000
One scholarship (covering maintenance, travel and fees) for the degree of doctor of philosophy in the area of marine biosystematics tenable at the University of the South Pacific will be offered for the first time from July 2000. The successful candidate will be based at the new marine studies programme facilities in Suva, Fiji, but may carry out research in any of the University's twelve member countries. Applicants must be UK citizens and must hold a master's degree or bachelor's degree with first-class honours in marine biosystematics or in a relevant field. Exceptionally, students who expect to graduate this summer with first-class honours may be considered. General Research grant programme
Applicants are normally expected to have a doctorate. Grants are rarely made to persons who have held the doctorate for less than one year, and never for pre-doctoral study or research. Proposals may be in all areas of scholarly knowledge except those in which support by government or corporate enterprise is more appropriate. Maximum award: $6000. Next deadline: March 1. Grants are for research only. Applicants may be residents of the United States, American citizens on the staff of foreign institutions, or foreign nationals whose research can only be carried out in the United States. Written requests for forms should include a self-addressed mailing label and the following information: indication of eligibility for the program; nature of the research; proposed use of the grant funds. CANCER RESEARCH CAMPAIGN
Education & psychosocial research awards: project grants
Applications are invited for research proposals from established researchers in the fields of education and psychosocial sciences within the priority areas identified by the education and psychosocial research committee. Deadline: March 10. Scientific research awards: project grants.
The CRC grants committee considers applications for three-year project grant funding. Often, this is a scientist's first introduction to the campaign, but applications are also received from CRC researchers if the proposal falls outside their existing funding remit. Applications are considered in any area of basic, translational or pre-clinical research and are judged on the basis of scientific excellence, innovation and relevance to cancer research. Applications for extensions or renewed periods of triennial funding are also considered by the CRC grants committee.

Support Research Fellowships
The Royal Society of Edinburgh, with the support of the Scottish Executive Education and Lifelong Learning Department, is pleased to invite applications for a limited number of support research fellowships, to commence on January 1 2001, and tenable in any higher education institution, research institute or laboratory in Scotland. Applicants must be existing members of academic staff who have held a teaching appointment for at least five years in any higher education institution in Scotland. A support fellowship will take the form of funding for the appointment of a temporary replacement to enable a support fellow to take study leave, either in their own institution or elsewhere, whilst remaining in continuous employment with their present employer. Applicants should normally be aged 40 or under on the date of appointment. The support research fellowships will normally be tenable for 12 months and, once appointed, the fellows will be required to devote their full time to research. Whilst the fellowships may be in any discipline, they should be in a field of research likely to enhance the transfer of ideas and technology from the research community to wealth creation and improvement of the quality of life. Developmental Pharmacology
Research grant applications are invited to study the ontogeny of drug metabolising enzymes, transporters, and receptors, and the corresponding ion channels and related proteins. A major objective of this initiative is the characterisation of the mechanisms involved in gene regulation and expression of these proteins during development, both prenatal and postnatal. Proposals for innovative collaborative projects are invited under a new programme of research. Funding is available through two streams: funding under the LINK scheme from all the sponsors for collaborative research projects linking industry and the science base; funding through EPSRC's standard grant mechanisms for universities working with publicly funded bodies with a responsibility for delivering integrated transport. All projects must be collaborative. Applicants should also demonstrate how the results will be used or applied in solving transport problems.
