The article in The THES (September 12) "Media study chiefs pan 'barmy' research focus" was based on incorrect information. It stated that 23 media studies departments that received 3a, 3b or 4 ratings in the 2001 research assessment exercise would not be funded by the Higher Education Funding Council for England. Under Hefce's proposals, media studies is one of seven subjects identified for research capability funding that benefits 3a and 3b units. All departments rated 4 receive mainstream QR funding.
