CORDIS, the Community Research and Development Information Service, has updated its 'Find a project' service for the sixth research framework programme (FP6) with project profiles from the first thematic priority, covering 'life sciences, genomics and biotechnology for health'. Each project factsheet details funding, objectives and the lead organisation and contact person.
The objective of research funding in this area is to integrate post-genomic research into more established biomedical and biotechnological approaches. Involvement of key stakeholders such as industry, healthcare providers and physicians, policy makers, regulatory authorities, patient associations and experts on ethical matters are also aims. The indicative budget allocated to life sciences, genomics and biotechnology for health for the duration of FP6 is 2514 million euro, distributed between two main areas.
Some 1209 million euro is available for advanced genomics and its application for health, including fundamental knowledge and basic tools for functional genomics in all organisms, as well as application of knowledge and technologies in the field of genomics and biotechnology for health. Over the course of FP6 a further 1305 million euro will fund research on combating major diseases, including application-oriented genomic approaches to major diseases, a focused effort on combating cancer, and the imperative of confronting the major communicable diseases linked to poverty.
The new projects accessible via the FP6 Projects service are those that are now launched and running, resulting from the first call for proposals in 2002. Some 513 million euro was available for the first call in this thematic priority, and more project profiles will be published as further confirmed projects from this call are launched.
The published projects include many financed through the new instruments, there are 14 Networks of Excellence (NoEs) and 41 Integrated Projects (IPs). Traditional instruments are represented by 43 Specific Targeted Research Projects (STREPs), 2 coordinating actions (CAs) and 16 specific supporting actions (SSAs).
In addition, the profiles of six projects funded under the 'Health' section of the crosscutting FP6 priority for 'Research for policy support' have also been published. These projects also result from the first call under this priority in 2002, when 149 million euro was made available. All six projects are STREPs, and the purpose of this part of the FP6 budget is to fund research that will underpin the formulation and implementation of Community policies.
The FP6 'Find a project' service already holds project profile information for all confirmed FP6-funded IST and JRC projects, as well as non-fusion Euratom projects and those funded under the third thematic priority of FP6, 'Nanotechnologies and nano-sciences, knowledge-based multifunctional materials and new production processes and devices' (NMP).
