In March 2002, the European Commission launched an invitation to submit Expressions of interest (EoI) for research actions under the Sixth Framework Programme's (FP6) new thematic priorities. By the deadline in June 2002, more than 11,500 proposals had been received, reviewed and analysed.
CORDIS, the European Commission's Research and Development Information Service, is publishing analytical reports for all of the research priorities. The reports demonstrate a strong interest in the process, with ideas submitted by organisations from more than 50 countries. Overall data shows a particularly strong interest in science and society as well as biodiversity issues.
Reports for each thematic priority offer qualitative and quantitative analyses. The analyses, conducted according to types of instrument, country and organisation, stress the relevance of the proposal topic and preparedness of actors. They underline that proposers are essentially academic institutions and research organisations; only a few small and medium sized enterprises took part in the consultation.
These analysis will help the Commission in preparing work programmes as well as defining the scope of the first FP6 calls for proposals to be published by the end of the year.
All reports are downloadable. To complement these reports, CORDIS is offering access to all EoIs through a search feature. The consultation of EoIs and related reports should help FP6 potential participants to review ideas, assess their own readiness to use new instruments and prepare for fruitful collaboration.
