Dear Sirs,
As you know, Italy was one of the founders of the COST cooperation and had the pleasure to chair the first COST Ministerial Conference in November 1971; since that date, it has been a very active participant in COST activities and a convinced supporter of the importance of COST in the European Research and Innovation Area.
Our country would therefore be honoured to assume ­ for the first time ­ the Chairmanship of the COST Committee of Senior Officials and for this purpose we propose the candidature of Professor Francesco Fedi. Professor Fedi has been involved in COST activities since the very beginning, has chaired two of the first COST Actions, has served as Chairman of the COST Technical Committee "Telecommunication Information Science and Technology" and in the most

recent years has been a very active member of the COST Committee of Senior Officials. His experience in COST, his scientific background, his wide experience in different international scientific and technical Organisations and his leading personality indicate that he would ensure a very effective chairmanship of the COST Committee of Senior Officials.
The Italian Ministry of Education, Universities and Research is ready to give to Professor Fedi an official position that will enable him to have the high-level contacts necessary to ensure and develop the role of COST in the European Research and Innovation Area and a suitable economic, logistic and secretariat support.
