Cool hero wards off gunmen on campus

六月 21, 2002

Leicester University and police have hailed a 40-year-old bouncer a hero after he stopped a gunman from entering a campus club with 700 people inside.

The head doorman (pictured) - who wants to be known only as Ian - was on duty outside a crowded students' union hall at the university when he stopped four young men from entering. One of the youths waved a loaded pistol in his face and demanded entry. Ian said: "My only thought was that the guy must not get inside a crowded dance hall with a gun." He stood his ground and the youths left.

The gun, which had been hurriedly hidden, was turned in to the police. It held live ammunition, and it had been fired in an earlier incident.

University assistant entertainments manager Paul Benyon said: "He kept his cool and defused the situation."
