Conviction prompts review

十月 6, 1995

Safety procedures are under review at the University of Wales, Swansea, following the conviction of Paul Hickson, the university's former assistant director of physical education, for rape and indecent assault. Hickson worked at the university between 1983 and 1990. All procedures relating to the safety of staff and students using the sports centre will be investigated.

"In managing the sports facilities great care is taken to ensure that the personal safety of users is properly safeguarded and respected," the university says.

"It is of great regret that occasionally rules are disregarded and procedures are not adhered to. When a member of staff at the university is directly involved, it is even more regrettable." To ensure that the existing procedures are appropriate, a review team has been established.

Millfield, the school which employed Hickson after Swansea, has written to Swansea pointing out that an incident during his time there was not reported when Millfield took up a reference. Swansea expects to respond this week.
