Contract negotiations underway for first FP6 projects

Brussels, Jan 2004

Some 25 Integrated Projects (7 dedicated to SMEs), 17 Networks of Excellence and 73 Specific Targeted Research Projects are in negotiation under FP6 Thematic Priority 3, following the initial 2002 call for proposals.

The first call for Sixth Framework Programme (FP6) proposals was highly successful, with heavy over subscription for the new funding instruments. Nearly 12 000 proposals were received with participants from 50 countries for the first €5 billion of FP6 funding, with a balanced distribution of generally high quality responses across all thematic areas and funding instruments.

Highest participation was in Thematic Priority 3 (nanotechnologies and nanoscience, knowledge-based multifunctional materials, and new production processes and devices). There were more than 1000 proposals for NMP projects involving 21 960 partners – some 20% of all FP6 applications.

Overall response distribution was well balanced, and the scientific and technical quality generally high. However, industrial participation could be improved and the Commission has taken active steps to boost this in the launch of the

call for 2004 proposals.

Following the two-stage, priority-specific evaluation process, altogether 18 Integrated Projects (IPs) and 17 Networks of Excellence (NoEs) were short listed for funding of €330 million in Thematic Priority 3 – a list of these projects can found on the

FP6 calls website

There is an additional €35 million funding for seven SME-specific IPs, and €170 million for traditional funding instruments to cover 73 STREPS, eight Coordination Actions (CAs) and ten Specific Support Actions (SSAs).
