Ireland's Deputy Prime Minister Mary Harney has announced that Hewlett-Packard is to invest 21.4 million euro in the building of a research and development (R&D) centre in Leixlip, County Kildare.
The centre will develop new inkjet printer technologies and will provide new opportunities for external research facilities in Ireland. In turn, these facilities will benefit from increased collaboration between Hewlett-Packard, Irish universities and research institutes.
'The investment is a perfect fit for the government's policy for the expansion of research and development in Ireland and the attraction of further high-calibre, knowledge-led activities,' said Ms Harney.
'The investment is important in moving Ireland further along the way to becoming a leader in the next generation of engineering, manufacturing and related information technologies,' she added.
The Irish government recently introduced tax incentives in the budget that target research and development, and are aimed at making Ireland more attractive for higher value-added activity.
