Commission paves the way for '.eu' registry

Brussels, 12 Sep 2002

A decision adopted by the European Commission has approved the criteria for the registry which will take care of the administration, management and marketing of the new '.eu' domain name.

Applications for the role of agency are required before 25 October. Those that emphasise geographical diversity will be encouraged. There will be no payment by the EU for the registry, as its revenues will be derived from third parties. It must also be a non-profit making agency.

Following selection, the registry's status will be confirmed through a contract with the European Commission and agreement with the Internet corporation for assigned names and numbers (ICANN).
