Commission Agenda Entry: Wednesday, 11 October: Launch of the China-EU Science & Technology Year 2007

十月 9, 2006

Brussels, 06 Oct 2006

The news:

Relations between the EU and China in the area of science and technology have been developing rapidly in the recent years and ITER (fusion energy) and Galileo (satellite navigation system) are two examples of large strategic projects. But many other joint projects are already on-going in various scientific disciplines.

The upcoming entry into force of both the EU's Seventh Research Framework Programme and China’s 11th Five Year Plan will give the opportunity to develop this cooperation in areas considered as strategic by both sides.

The “China-EU Science & Technology Year 2007” will highlight and stimulate this cooperation through events taking place throughout the EU and China in 2007.

The “China-EU Science & Technology Year 2007” will be launched on the occasion of a Policy Forum organised in Brussels on 11 October 2006.

Key-note speeches will be given by Commissioner for Science and Research, Janez Potočnik, and the Chinese Vice-minister Wu Zhongze.

The Policy Forum will cover areas of Eu-China cooperation in science and technology, including health, renewable energies, mobility of researchers, environment and biotechnology, agriculture, food and animal health.

The idea of organising a “China-EU Science and Technology Year” was first mooted at the May 2005 China-EU High-Level Forum on Science and Technology Strategy in Beijing, with Chinese Minister Xu Guanhua, Minister of Science and Technology, and European Commissioner Janez Potočnik.

The event:
Conference with Commissioner Janez Potočnik and Chinese Minister WU Zhongze at the Auditorium Madou Tower, Place Madou 1, Brussels
Speeches at 9:30
Press point at 10.10
