Brussels, 01 Sep 2006

The news:

The European Commission is supporting efforts to bring together researchers and the general public through its research framework programmes.

It will fund a series of large scale events on 22 September, showing the fascination of research and celebrating researchers.

These “Researchers’ Nights” will offer the general public, young and old, from whatever walk of life, a unique opportunity to experience the real face of researchers: not only working in their lab but enjoying life. Concerts, theatre performances, hands-on experiments, living exhibitions, quizzes, opportunities to “play scientist for a night”, and competitions will take place in more than 100 locations on the same night.

Research institutions, enterprises, foundations, associations, universities, high schools and museums will make this evening an unforgettable experience and open their doors to the hidden treasures that the public may not yet know about.

On the basis of the success of the 2005 “Researchers’ night”, the European Commission has selected 31 projects in 22 European countries. Several thousand people are expected to attend the various events.

Examples:

  • Experience a volcanic eruption as if you were there in Hamburg (Germany)
  • Fly with the owl of research in the streets of Athens (Greece)
  • Unveil the “Apocalypse curtain” in Angers (France),
  • Learn about the mystic language of the Aztecs in Lund (Sweden)
  • Re-build a Roman temple in Naples (Italy)
