College to move in an Ellipse

(Photograph) - The Royal College of Art has unveiled plans for a £22 million building on its site in Albertopolis. Architects Nicholas Grimshaw and Partners have designed a seven-floor research and exhibition centre for the site opposite the Royal Albert Hall in South Kensington, London.

The privately funded building, to be called The Ellipse, will replace the one-storey Gulbenkian Gallery. It will have public exhibition space, five floors providing studios for painting, drawing and new technology, a floor dedicated to research and extra space for two existing departments.

Building work is expected to begin in July 2002 and be complete by 2004.
