Psychologists explore behind those superficial stereotypes to find the fundamental . . . er . . stereotype underneath. A study of claims that, among orchestral players, brass players are beer-drinking extroverts while string musicians are more grumpy and arrogant, found that this is indeed true. Richard Kwiatkowski, senior lecturer in occupational psychology at the University of East London, also found the musicians united in another stereotypical way - against their conductors, who were described by one as "overpaid and short of talent".
