Clarification

On April 29, we reported that delegates at the Association of University Teachers' annual conference agreed "by just four votes" that the union would boycott Haifa and Bar-Ilan universities in Israel.

In fact, both motions were subject to two votes - the first on whether they should be referred for further consideration, and the second (after delegates agreed not to refer them) on whether they should become union policy.

A call to refer the motion on Haifa was lost by four votes (96 votes to 92), but when the motion itself was put to the vote, it was carried convincingly on a show of hands. In the case of Bar-Ilan, reference was lost without the need for a count and the motion itself was then carried on a show of hands.
