Universities across the UK would benefit if the bid to bring the 2012 Olympics to the capital succeeds, Michael Driscoll, the vice-chancellor of Middlesex University, said this week. He argued that academic institutions could play a key role in providing language services, training volunteers and marshals, and offering acclimatisation centres. Professor Driscoll, who chairs the London Higher Olympic subgroup, said that efforts to promote London as an Olympic venue would also help attract overseas students to the UK. After the Games, the new sports facilities would be available for students. He added: 'Not only will a successful London bid profit higher education institutions directly, but students and staff in London and the UK can also be part of a unique 2012 Games'
