Cambridge support for Dr Evans is not enough

More than 200 Cambridge University academics have supported calls to establish an independent review panel to consider lecturer Gill Evans' personal case for promotion. But Dr Evans's supporters were outnumbered in a university-wide ballot this week by almost four to one by those who have rejected the recommendation.

The result is a significant victory for the university in its four-year battle with Dr Evans (pictured above) over her campaign to reform what she claims are "outdated, secretive and unfair" promotions procedures. The university had rejected the mediation of former chief justice Sir Brian Neill, who said that Dr Evans should have her own review panel, to ensure fair consideration of her case.
