Britons are 'slaves to the steering wheel'

BRITONS are becoming "slaves to the steering wheel" and the Government's measures to cut car dependency are "pitiable" according to research from the Open University. The average household's weekly spend on motoring has risen from 7 per cent of total household spending in 1953 to 15 per cent in 1994/95 at Pounds 36.17, according to Vital Travel Statistics by Steven Potter.
