Scotland has long attracted a disproportionate share of United Kingdom students, but now even the courses are moving north. Bristol University is transferring its MBA in international business to Edinburgh University's management school.
Bristol's vice-chancellor, Sir John Kingman, said the programme had been an academic success, gaining accreditation from the Association of MBAs.
"However, the programme needs the support of a full-scale business school, and the university believes that the finance necessary to enlarge the graduate school of international business cannot be made available given the other major demands on its resources."
The agreement with Edinburgh was an ideal way to preserve the best features of the programme and the interests of its alumni, Sir John said.
Catherine Cunningham, director of the Bristol graduate school, stressed that its research, PhD and MSc programmes were continuing.
The MBA attracts up to 55 students a year, and the last cohort will continue at Bristol, graduating in July 2000.
Ms Cunningham said compulsory redundancies were not expected.
