Alumnus to be proud of No 161 may be assumed to have done in his chances of becoming Archbishop of Canterbury, at least during the present government. The Rt Revd Keith Sutton, also known as the Bishop of Lichfield, was among the very few members of the House of Lords to vote against the government on all four divisions on the last day of the report stage of the Teaching and Higher Education Bill. Presumably, he voted on the basis of experience of higher education derived from being an undergraduate at Jesus College, Cambridge, then principal of Ridley Hall, Cambridge and president of Queen's College, Birmingham.
It remains to be seen if this political activity leads to additions to his stock of honorary degrees - from Keele and Wolverhampton.
