Oxford University has appointed Douglas Holt , associate professor at Harvard Business School, L'Oreal professor of marketing and fellow of Worcester College; and Michael Sheringham , professor of French at Royal Holloway, University of London, has been appointed to the Marshal Foch chair in French literature and will be a fellow of All Souls College.

Aberdeen University has appointed Neva Haites , associate dean (clinical), its first female vice-principal. She will take over from Stephen Logan as head of the College of Life Sciences and Medicine when he becomes senior vice-principal on the retirement of John Sewel in July.

David Evans , reader in applied health policy research at the University of the West of England, has been appointed a non-executive board member of National Health Service Direct; UWE has appointed Gareth Vaughan , former human resources director of 118 Ltd, head of personnel services.

City University has appointed: Scott Moeller , former senior executive at Deutsche Bank and Morgan Stanley, director of executive development at the Business School; and Tony Woodiwiss , professor of sociology, dean of the School Social Sciences.

Richard Jenkyns , professor of classical tradition and a fellow of Lady Margaret Hall, Oxford, has been elected public orator by members of the Congregation to succeed Jasper Griffin on his retirement.

Aedin Cassidy , former head of molecular nutrition at Unilever, has been appointed to the chair in diet and health in the School of Medicine, Health Policy and Practice at the University of East Anglia.
