* Ron Ritchie, former head of department for professional development at Bath Spa University College, has been named dean of the faculty of education at the University of the West of England.

* Terry Cunnington, former director of audit services for the London Stock Exchange, has taken up the role of president of the Institute of Internal Auditors for the UK and Ireland.

* Mike Gasson, professor and head of food safety science at the Institute of Food Research, a member of the government's advisory committee on the Microbial Safety of Food, and chair of the advisory committee on novel foods and processes, has been appointed acting director at the IFR.

* The Learning Lab has elected Nigel Ward, managing director of Granada Learning, chair of its board of trustees; David Burrows, head of education and skills development at Microsoft, vice-chair; and David Fahey, financial director of Synetrix Limited, treasurer. Other recently appointed board members include: Clare Spratt of Thomson Netg; Liz Wallis of FD Learning Ltd; Guy Bates of XMA Limited; Keith Duckitt, head of information and communications technology at the Learning and Skills Council; Dhruv Patel of Support IT (UK) Ltd; Brian Sutton of Ufi Ltd; Alison Halstead, dean of learning and teaching at the University of Wolverhampton; Patrick Craven, assistant director of E-assessment at OCR; and Stephen Molyneux, director of the Learning Lab.

* Alicia Wise, formerly of the UK's Joint Information Systems Committee, will replace Jens Bammel as chief executive of the Publishers Licensing Society from January 2004.
